A native of Los Angeles, Amanda Gorman is an American poet and activist. She is the person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate and the youngest poet as of 2021 to perform at a presidential inauguration.  Amanda is a cum laude graduate of Havard University, where she studied sociology.

Amanda is an activist and a poet from Los Angeles, California. Her poetry focuses on issues of race, feminism, oppression, marginalization, and also African diaspora. She founded One Pen One Page in 2016, a non-profit organization that gives young writers a platform to tell their stories.

She has written for New York Times and performed for Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, Malala Yousafzai, among others during the Obama White House administration according to her website.  In addition, the poet has also performed commissioned poems for CBS This Morning and wrote Nike’s 2020 Black History Month Campaign.

The Hill We Climb

Gorman will perform a poetry reading at the Inauguration ceremony of Joe Biden as the 46th president of America. At 22 years old, she will become the youngest poet to perform at a presidential inauguration.  She told the Associated Press that her poem will be titled ” The Hill We Climb.” Moreover, the poet has performed in the White House during President Obama’s administration.

Other poets to perform at an inauguration ceremony were Maya Angelou and Robert Frost.

Amanda Gorman Vogue

Gorman appears on Vogue  Us’s May 2021 cover. On her Twitter account, Amanda  wrote that: “honoured to be the first poet EVER on the cover of Vogue [and] what a joy to do so while wearing a black designer Virgil Abloh.” The poet who signed with IMG Models days after the Joe Biden Inauguration performance revealed to Vogue that she has turned down endorsements of “around” $17 million, or about €20 million, worth of deals because the companies do not ” speak to” her.
