Cooper was an intern at the Central Intelligence Agency while studying political science. Anderson pursued journalism with no formal journalistic education and is a self-proclaimed news anchor since he was in utero. He took a break from reporting, after his first correspondence work in the early 1990s and lived in Vietnam for a year, during which he studied the Vietnamese language at Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Anderson became a correspondent for ABC News in 1995. He later moved to anchor positions on CNN a few years later and hosting his own news program, Anderson Cooper 360, beginning in 2003. He began an ongoing affiliation with CBS’s 60 Minutes, in the year 2006, to which he contributed reports on topics such as the drug war in Mexico, rape in Congo, and the dire condition of coral reefs off the coast of Cuba.
In September 2011 he debuted a daytime talk show, Anderson (later rebranded Anderson Live). The show failed to make a sizeable fan viewership and went off the air after two years.
Cooper attended Dalton School, a private co-educational university preparatory day school in Manhattan, and graduated at the age of 17. Later, he attended Yale University where he was inducted into the Manuscript Society, majoring in Political Science, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1989.
He won both Peabody and National Headliner Awards for his coverage of the Indian Ocean Tsunami in the year 2005. In 2006, he won an Edward R. Murrow Award for his coral reef report. Additionally, in 2013 he received a GLAAD Media Award.
