Born Paul Andrew Richter, Andy Richter is an American actor, comedian, writer, and talk show announcer. He is famous as the sidekick for Conan O’Brien on each of the O’Brien talk shows The Tonight Show on NBC, Late Night, and Conan on TBS.

Andy Richter Family

Richter was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His parents are, Laurence R.9father) who was a lecturer at Indiana University, and his mother Glenda Swanson(nee Palmer) who is a kitchen cabinet designer. Moreover, he is the third of four children. However, his parents divorced while he was 4 and later his father came out as gay.

Richter was married to Sarah Thyre, a comedic actress and writer/author from 18th March 1994 to 2019. Moreover, his wife was part of the cast of the cult comedy series Strangers with Candy. Andy Richter Career

Richter was a film major at Columbia College Chicago where he learned the basics of comedic acting and writing. This was achieved by starring in numerous student films and videos in the late 1980s. Moreover, he worked as a production assistant o commercial shoots in Chicago after leaving Columbia in 1988. He began taking classes at Chicago’s Improv Olympic in 1989. Later he went from student to House Performer within a year. In addition, he branched out working with The Comedy Underground.  He also worked with the Annoyance Theater. Producer Jill Soloway staged The Real Live Brady Bunch making The Annoyance Theater hit gold. With live, word-for-word performances of the 70’s sitcom in the early 1990s. They moved to New York City. This was due to the fact the show was so popular and attracted national attention. However, Mike Brady’s actor in the Chicago cast chose not to go to New York. It was then that Richter asked Soloway if he could play Mike in New York. She agreed since she had not cast a replacement.

Late Night with Colon O’Brien

Two fellow Annoyance members (Beth Cahil and Melanie Hutsell. They played Marcia and Jon Brandy in The Real Live Brady Bunch stage show. As they were hired as cast members on Saturday Night Live (SNL), he was able to get into the after-show parties. He met SNL writer Rober Smigel because he had friends on SNL. He was hired by Smigel two years later for a new show he was producing, Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

Moreover, weeks before the show began, in 1993, he was upgraded to Conan O’Brrien’s sidekick. He had originally been hired as a writer. This was after Smigel noticing that the two had a strong rapport. He noticed it during a practice run-through. This was when the production staff was testing lighting angles and sound.

However, he departed from Late Night after the May 26, 2000 show after seven years with the show. He said that after seven years of being on the show, he got itchy. In addition, he said that he has a philosophy that if one enjoys good fortune, they should try to push it. Rather than sitting there and say, oh, that’s fine, this amount is good enough for them. Additionally, they should see how much they can stretch their good fortune. and that he was curious.

After Late Nite

In the year 2000, Richter left his post at Late Night. He went to pursue a career acting in films and television. However, Fox’s Andy Richter Controls the Universe. This was his first major venture was canceled after two mid-season runs. Additionally, Quintuplets, which was his next Fox sitcom lasted one season.

His 2007 television series, Andy Barker P.I. was co-written and executive produced by Canon O’Brien. Richter played an accountant who could attract clients. A woman asks him to find her husband who she thinks faked his death.  After she comes to his office thinking he is the former tenant, a private investigator. Barker continues to do his accounting job and decides to pursue this job and becomes a private detective in earnest. This seems to pick up as the series goes on. After poor ratings, the series was canceled. It had played on NBC with all six episodes in the first season on NBC. com. This was despite being named as one of the Top Ten Shows of 2007 by Entertainment Weekly.

The Tonight Show

Richter joined Conan O’Brien once again. He was the announcer for The Tonight Show in Los Angeles. It was announced on 24th February 2009. He was part of the show’s writing staff and often commented and interacted with Canon during the opening monologue. Moreover, he frequently appeared in comedy sketches on the show. He began joining Conan in mid-December 2009 on the coach during interviews. His former sidekick role on Late Night was much the same.

According to Richter, it was not enjoyable having to deal with production companies while developing television shows. He also enjoyed having a steady paycheck again.  Additionally, he said that he was happy to be back and making TV every night. He was happy he was not going to wait for six months to get cogent and sparkingly clear notes after asking permission from someone. Then wait for another month for them to get back from Hawaii and say he can go make television. Moreover, he said he felt like a plumber who kept going into the building and saying they can put some pipes together. Also, watching his wrenches gather dust.

Conan

Richter followed and resumed his roles as announcer, writer, general sidekick, and participant in comedy sketches when Conan O’Brien returned to the air as host of his self-titled TBS show in 2010.

Game Shows

Richter was not picked by the classic Pyramid game show developed for CBS. This happened even though he was considered to be a potential host. The series would not have affected his role on Conan had it been picked up. Moreover, TBS announced a possible new version of Pyramid on May 18, 2011, to be hosted by Richter.

In addition, at the just for Laughs festival in Chicago, he hosted the Team Coco Presents the Conan Writers Live comedy special for TBS in June 2010. O’Brien had been prohibited from hosting any television program until fall 2010 hence Richter hosted in his place. The step Up game show was signed up by Richter for him to host. It was ordered by Fox in July 2013.

During a first-round game of the 2009 to 2010 season’s Million Dollar Celebrity Invitational, he won $68,000. He holds the record for an all-time highest one-day score on Celebrity Jeopardy and donated his earnings to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

He began hosting the ABC game show Big Fan in January 2017.

Other Television Appearances

Richter appeared in the Fox series Malcolm in the Middle in April 2002. He played a psychiatrist. He used to give therapy to Malcolm, Reese, and Dewey. In addition, he appeared in the NBS sitcom Will & Grace in October 2005. Grace Adler teased and misled the annoying blind date he played. She only dated him to prove she was not a snob in The Old Man and the Sea.

Moreover, in Monk, in the episode, Mr. Monk Makes a Friend he appeared as a murderer posing as Adrain’s Monk’s best friend. In the Fox series Arrested Development in 2006, he appeared in the episode S.O.B.s. Additionally,  in quintuplets, he reprises these roles in several episodes of season 4 as, Donnie, Chareth, Rocky, Emmett, and himself.

Furthermore, in the TV show The New Adventures of Old Christine, his role as Sad Dad was recurring from 2006 to 2008. Moreover, on the TV show The Mighty B!, Simon Cristini on True Jackson, VP, provides the voice, Ben. He also provides the voice on the TV show The Penguins of Madagascar in the character Mort.
