Ann Curry is an American journalist and photojournalist. She has been a reporter for more than 30 years, focused on human suffering in war zones and natural disasters. Curry was born in Agana, Guam to her parents Hiroe Nagase (mother) and Robert Paul ‘Bob’ (father). Her father, an American from Pueblo, Colorado had Irish and German ancestry whereas her mother is Japanese. The anchor’s parents met when her father, a career United States Navy sailor worked as a streetcar conductor during the United States occupation of Japan after world war II. However, he was transferred out of Jpan but returned two years later to marry Nagase.

Curry has four siblings and she is the eldest of five children. Unfortunately, her brother died at the age of 2 while serving in the Air Force while she was 26 years old.

Curry is happily married to Brian Ross. The couple married on October 21, 1989. In addition, they have two children namely McKenzie and William Walker. Currently, they live in New Canaan, Connecticut.

Ann Curry Education

For several years as a child, the journalist lived in Japan and attended a school on the United States Fleet Activities Sasebo naval base in Sasebo, Nagasaki, the Ernest J. King School. Later, she graduated from Ashland High School after moving to Ashland, Oregon. Moreover, she graduated from the University of Oregon in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.

Ann Curry Career

1978-1989

In 1978, Curry began her broadcasting career as an intern at then NBC-affiliate (now CBS-affiliate) KTVL in Medford Oregon. She rose to become the station’s first female news reporter there. Additionally, she moved to NBC affiliate KGW in Portland in 1980 where she was a reporter and anchor. Moreover, she moved to Los Angeles as a reporter for KCBS-TV four years later. Here, she received two Emmy Awards while working as a reporter from 1984 to 1990.

1990-2012

Curry joined NBC News first as the NBC News Chicago correspondent in 1990 then as the anchor of NBC News at Sunrise from 1991 to 1996. Moreover, from 1994 to 1997, she served as a substitute news anchor for Matt Lauer at Today. She served as news anchor at Today, becoming the show’s second-longest serving news anchor from 1997 to 2011 behind Frank Blair. Moreover, she served as a substitute anchor for Today during this time. Additionally, she was named co-anchor of Dateline NBC with Stone Phillips on June 24, 2005. However, when Phillip left on July 2, 2007, she remained as the primary anchor until she replaced Meredith Vieira on Today in 2011. From 2005 to 2011, the anchor was the primary substitute on NBC Nightly News.

Furthermore, she bungee-jumped off the Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough, Egland on December 17, 2007, to raise money for charity. The anchor’s jump was shown live on the Today show.

Moreover, she traveled to Iran in 2009 where she interviewed then-President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. This was days before Ahmadinejad traveled to America to speak in front of the United Nations General Assembly.

Departure from Today

The anchor was widely reported as being replaced as co-host of Today in June 2012. In her discussions with NBC, Curry hired attorney Robert Barnett to represent her. However, in an emotional broadcast on the show, she announced on June 28, 2011, that she was leaving Today. Moreover, as NBC News national and international correspondent/anchor and Today anchor-at-large, she signed a new multi-year contract with the network. Particularly, as she was one of the most prominent Asian-American journalists on the national stage, her departure had led to some discussions about racism.

For a time, the anchor led a seven-person unit producing content and reporting for NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt., Dateline NBC, Rock Center with Brian Williams, Today, and MSNBC. Moreover, the anchor anchored multiple NBC News primetime specials. She made her first post-departure appearance on Today on August 9, 2012. The anchor reported a story during the show’s coverage at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
