In her hometown of Toronto, O’Hara began her comedy career as a cast member of The Second City in 1974. She was Gilda Radner’s understudy until she left for Saturday Night Live. Two years later, this theatre group launched SCTV. It is a sketch comedy show in which O’Hara was a regular performer. Her performances on SCTV, however, garnered her popularity in Canada, which is why she returned to the country.

She earned a Genie Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Participation for her role in the 1999 film The Life Before This. Also, O’Hara has voiced characters in a variety of animated films, including The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Bartok the Magnificent (1999), Chicken Little, and others.

On the other hand, she played Moira Rose in the CBC sitcom Schitt’s Creek from 2015 to 2020, co-starring Eugene Levy, whom she met on the set of Second City Television. She is the happy winner of five Canadian Screen Awards for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2020 for her role.
