Dominique Jackson (born Dominique Brebnor) is a Tobagonian-American transgender actress, novelist, model, and reality television star who goes by the stage name Tyra Allure Ross. She is most known as Elektra Abundance in the FX television series Pose, where she played the major role. She has appeared in Vogue Espana as a model.

Despite growing up with a grandmother who had “station,” Jackson had a difficult childhood that included bullying and sexual assault. In Tobago, being recognized as transsexual by her family and culture was never an option. She was frequently chastised for showing her natural feminine traits. She went to the United States with her mother when she was 15 years old.

Previously, Jackson was married to Al Jackson. After dating for almost 18 years, they married at a courthouse. They later had their wedding ceremony during an episode of Strut.

In 2015, she received her green card and underwent gender confirmation surgery in the same year.

While on vacation with her then-husband in Aruba in 2018, Jackson complained to authorities that a guy attempted to rape her. Jackson announced on social media in 2020 that she and her spouse Al had divorced in late 2018.

Modeling

In order to establish the right prospects, Jackson did most of her early modeling work for free. She was a resident model for fashion designer Adrian Alicea at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in 2009. She modelled for Vogue Espana. Hunter Schafer, another trans model, also walked in the 2021 Mugler show with her.

Television and film

Jackson has appeared in the films Call Me, Christopher Street: The Series, My Truth, My Story. She also appeared in a Caribbean LGBTQ Oral History and Storytelling Documentary Series produced by the Caribbean Equality Project Visible.  The LGBTQ Caribbean Diaspora, and the Oxygen reality television series Strut (2016). She got  nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Strut.

Jackson also got the lead role of Elektra Abundance on the FX series Pose in 2018, which is based in New York City’s late-1980s ballroom subculture scene. The show finally launched on June 3, 2018, and received positive reviews. With over 50 transgender characters, season one had the largest cast of transgender actors ever for a scripted network series. In the second and third seasons of Pose, she reprised her role as Elektra Wintour.

Writing and community service

Additionally, Jackson has been candid about her struggles with mental illness. After a thirteen-year writing process, her autobiography, The Transsexual from Tobago, was released. She has also worked for various nonprofit groups that provide outreach and services to the LGBTQ+ community, such as Destination Tomorrow in the Bronx.
