Ruth Jones, a teacher and maid, and Robert Earl Jones, a boxer, butler, and driver, gave birth to James Earl Jones on January 17, 1931, in Arkabutla, Mississippi. Soon after James Earl’s birth, his father left the family and went on to become a stage and film performer in New York and Hollywood. Jones and his father did not meet until the 1950s, after which they reconciled. In interviews, he has stated that both of his parents are of mixed African-American, Irish, and Native American descent.
Jones was raised on a farm in Jackson, Michigan, by his maternal grandparents, John Henry and Maggie Williams, from the age of five; they had relocated from Mississippi during the Great Migration.

Instead, he concentrated on drama at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance in the hopes of accomplishing something he enjoyed before being drafted to fight in the Korean War, which he expected he would have to do.
