In 1976, Lunden joined GMA as a feature news/consumer reporter. She later became fill-in co-host when former co-host Sandy Hill left to work on ABC’s coverage of the 1976 Winter Olympics.

Lunden became popular and was promoted to co-host with David Hartman, the program’s original host, in 1980. She went on to co-host with ABC’s Charlie Gibson. She left GMA after 17 years as a co-host. Her last day was on September 5, 1997.
