Joe Johns is an American lawyer and journalist. He is currently working as the senior Washington correspondent for CNN based in Washington D.C. He was promoted to this position in 2014. Previously, he worked as the correspondent for NBC news Capitol Hill for TODAY and for other NBC programs. He worked in Washington D.C for WRC-TV/NBC4 and as an anchor for WSAZ-TV IN 1980.

Johns schooled at West High School in Columbus, Ohio where he was a star discus thrower. He also went to Marshall University in Huntington, West of Virginia where he was a field athlete and they gave him a four-year scholarship for being a sports student. He made it into the Marshall University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003. From that university, he attained a bachelor of arts degree in political science.  Also he has a law degree from American University in D.C.


Johns began his career on TV as a reporter and anchor at WSAZ-TV in 1980m in Huntington, West Virginia. Later on, he joined WCOC-TV in Charlotte, North Carolina. In1983, he joined the WRC-TV NBC affiliate where he received great recognition for his work. The nation knows him for reporting on crime and law enforcement. At NBC, he worked for a decade as the NBC News Capitol Hill correspondent.
He covered top political stories including the impeachment of the former president of the US Bill Clinton. he also broke the story regarding House Majority Leader Tom Delay concerning his first indictment on conspiracy charges. He also covered Beltway Sniper and the Sago mining disaster stories.


In 2004, CNN made Johns the congressional correspondent responsible for covering a wide range of breaking news and political news. Also, he served as a justice correspondent and CNN assigned him to cover the supreme court and also report on legal and crime issues. He appears on Anderson Cooper 360 and many other shows all over the network. He received a  promotion to CNN’s senior Washington correspondent.
