John Legend told him that he heard it in the way Jerel played and in the way he sang.

Jerel sang James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World” during his audition and had all the four coaches turn and also got a standing ovation.
In reference to his performance, coach John legend said; “Everything you did was done with such a level of confidence, note for note, you had a plan. You knew where you wanted to go and your voice had so much fire.” He also tried to persuade Mike to choose him as his coach; ” Mike I would love to coach you, we are gonna go far in this competition.”
” You are very talented. I love all those runs, it was effortless. You showed us all that. So I cannot wait to see what you show us in the Battles, in the Knockouts; It’s gonna be very incredible,” Kelly Clarkson remarked.
Coach Blake was a mixture of shocked and impressed, saying that he thought it was a girl singing. “I didn’t think that was you, Mike. You were singing notes in a place in your voice that is incredible.”
“That is what I love about this show. Everything that happened to me when I turned around was a shock. And I think that what you’re gonna do every time you get on this stage, man, is blow people away,” Blake added.
All coach Nick Jonas wanted was to be Mike’s coach.
