Walsh started working for CNN in Pakistan in March 2011. He joined CNN as a full-time journalist in Kabul in September. Later, in August 2012, Paton Walsh relocated to Beirut, where he began reporting on Syria’s civil conflict. In September 2006, he moved from the Guardian newspaper to Channel Four News at ITN as a foreign affairs journalist. He reported from Mosul and Basra and covered the Iraq surge from both Washington and Baghdad.
Walsh was one of only a few western correspondents in Zimbabwe during the MDC’s harsh repression. From both sides of the battle lines, he covered the war between Georgia and Russia. He was deported from Sri Lanka after reporting on charges of sexual abuse. During the 2009 presidential election crisis, Walsh was embedded in Afghanistan. He has written extensively about the political and military situation in the country. Also, he covered the May 2010 Bangkok protests, as well as the Indonesian mud volcanoes.
Walsh began working at The Observer newspaper in 1999 when he was 21 years old. On the other hand, in 2002, he was one of two journalists who gained access to the Dubrovka theatre siege grounds. He has received numerous honors for his work, including Young Journalist of the Year and the Human Rights Award.
