Robert Hays is an American actor who is most known for his appearances in the films Airplane! and its sequel, Frank in Take This Job and Shove It, and Robert Seaver in Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey.

Robert Hays Career

Hays stayed in San Diego for a time before moving to Hollywood, where he quickly rose through the ranks of the local theater community. He appeared in various performances at the Old Globe Theatre, including a touring production of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew in which he played Petruchio.

Hays appeared as a military corporal in an episode of the television show Wonder Woman in 1977. He appeared in many short-lived television shows, including ABC’s The Young Pioneers in 1978, Angie in 1979, Starman in 1980, and FM in 1981. In multiple episodes of That ’70s Show, he played “Bud,” the man who was assumed to be Hyde’s father. Hays also worked as a film and television director and producer. In 1981, he became the host of the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live.

Iron Man

He has voiced the title character in the Marvel Comics adaptation of Iron Man and has appeared in a number of television movies. Hays reunited with Airplane! co-director David Zucker in a slapstick-laden TV commercial promoting tourism in Wisconsin in 2013.
