A native of Paducah, Kentucky, Sam Champion who was born as Samuel James Champion is an American weather anchor best known for his  25-year career on WABC-TV and Good Morning America?

Samuel formerly co-anchored  America’s Morning Headquarters (AMHQ) and 23.5 Degrees With Sam Champion on The Weather Channel. He left  ABC on December 4, 2013, and became the managing editor of The Weather Channel.

He began working on Weather Channel on January 1, 2014. Sam also appeared on the Today show on NBC. Sam left NBC and Weather Channel in 2016 but returned to work on a fill-in basis to ABC channel. In June 2019, he returned to WABC-TV to become the weekday morning and noon weather anchor.

Champion attended Fairfax High School in Fairfax, VA  graduating in 1979.  He then joined Eastern Kentucky University where he studied and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast News.

The award-winning journalist, Champion, worked at WPSD-TV in Paducah, Kentucky, and WJKS (later WCWJ) in Jacksonville, Florida. In 1988, Sam became a weather forecaster for WABC-TV’s Eyewitness News in New York City. In 2004, he went on Good Morning America at a salary of $1.5 million per year.


On April 7, 2008, he became the host of Sea Rescue. Sea Rescue is an educational and informational program in Litton’s Weekend Adventure that focuses on the rescue, rehabilitation, and in many instances release of animals back into wildlife. Good Morning America announced in August 2006 that Champion would join that show and ABC News, effective from September 5, 2006.

On December 2, 2013, Champion announced his departure from ABC. He left the station to become an on-air presence and managing editor of The Weather Channel. Sam did his last show on Good Morning America on December 4th, 2013, and was replaced by Ginger Zee.

Champion who is an Award-winning journalist had occasionally appeared on Live with Kelly and Ryan which was the daily talk show produced by WABC-TV and CNN’s Larry King Live. The American born journalist, Sam, often begins his 30-second weathercasts by saying, “Let’s get to the boards.” His catchphrase when breaking for weather reports from local ABC stations is, “That’s the weather around the nation. Here’s what you can expect this morning.”

Shortly after his departure from GMA, it was announced that Champion would join The Weather Channel to host his own morning show, titled America’s Morning Headquarters (AMHQ). The show debuted on March 17, 2014. In September 2015, it was revealed that Champion would leave AMHQ to serve as a contributor to its primetime programs.

In December 2016, Champion and The Weather Channel decided not to renew their contract hence leaving the Company officially on December 27, 2016. Following that, he returned to ABC to Fill in for Ginger Zee, as a weather forecaster on Good Morning America. Ginger Zee, the Chief Meteorologist for ABC, was on maternity leave hence the need.
