Elam works as a CNN journalist in the Los Angeles bureau. She has covered a wide range of stories since entering the western area. Moreover, she oversaw CNN’s coverage of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano’s eruption in 2018, which destroyed much of the Leilani Estates community on the Big Island. Also, she arrived barely hours after the eruption began and photographed the unrelenting flow of lava as it destroyed everything in its way. She and her colleagues were able to capture photos from only a few feet away from an active fissure.
Elam has reported on a number of natural catastrophes. She was among the first reporters to arrive on the scene after a shooting at Los Angeles International Airport stranded thousands of passengers and killed TSA employee Gerardo Hernandez. Also was in charge of reporting on the deaths of 19 firemen in a wildfire near Prescott, Arizona.
She was there at the Academy Awards in 2017 when the notorious envelope snafu resulted in “La La Land” being declared best picture instead of the actual winner, “Moonlight.” Elam worked as a Saturday evening anchor and general assignment reporter for KNBC Los Angeles before joining CNN Los Angeles. When Whitney Houston was discovered dead she was on a desk in a Beverly Hills hotel room and anchoring KNBC’s breaking news coverage of the Seal Beach killings.
