Alongside Lena Horne in The Lady and Her Music in 1981, Tunie made her Broadway debut. She played Jessica Griffin in the CBS daytime soap opera, As The World Turns her start from 1987 to 1995. Moreover, she received NAACPImage Awards nominations for Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Drama Series in 2003 and 2004 with her reprised the role from 2000 to 2007. Swift Justice, Law & Order, Chicago Hope, New York Undercover, and Sex and the City are primetime dramas she guest-starred in. In the ABC police drama NYPD Blue, her role was recurring as Lilian Fancy from 1994 to 1997.

She made her film debut in Sweet Lorraine. In a number of movies, she had supporting roles. Later in 1987, she appeared on Wall Street.
