Alcindor got her first full-time job at Newsday as a reporter. Newsday is a newspaper based in Melville, New York. She worked there for two years. Among the stories, she covered while there was the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

USA Today

Yamiche eventually moved to USA Today, as a multimedia reporter based in New York City in December 2011 to cover national breaking news. While there, she reported on the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the shooting of Trayvon Martin, among many other stories.

In 2013, she was named the “Emerging Journalist of the Year” by the National Association of Black Journalists. She also began appearing as a guest contributor on NBC News and MSNBC.

In November 2015, Yamiche left USA Today to work for The New York Times as a national political reporter.

Alcindor was named White House correspondent of the PBS NewsHour in January 2018. She was replacing John Yang, who was named the NewsHour’s national correspondent.

She covers the Trump presidency, and during the 2020 presidential election season, Alcindor was one of the moderators of the sixth Democratic debate.
