In 2006, Wojcicki together with Linda Avey and Paul Cusenza. 23andMe is named for the 23 pairs of chromosomes in a normal human cell. It is known for providing a direct-to-consumer genetic testing service. Customers provide a saliva sample that is laboratory analyzed to generate reports relating to the customer’s ancestry and genetic predispositions to health-related topics.
In 2008, the company’s personal genome test kit was named “Invention of the Year” by Time magazine. FDA started to give approval to 23andMe’s health-related tests starting 2015. These tests include risk from cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, certain cancers, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and coeliac diseases.
