He began Geography A-level, but never took the exam. Moreover, he served at the meteorological office at Manchester Airport for a period of two years from 1970 prior to studying applied health and social care at what is current Coventry University, where he met his wife. Furthermore, he spent four years researching meteorology. Besides, he trained for a year in weather presentation at the Met Office College, Shinfield near Reading. From 1980, he served at the Nottingham Weather Centre, presenting his first forecast for Radio Lincolnshire, later further forecasts for the BBC’s Midlands Today (in the Nottingham news opt-out, beginning 28 May 1980) and also Central Television. Later in 1985, he was a national forecaster on the BBC.

Kettley used to serve for the Met Office, and has before presented weather for BBC Radio Five Live. He has presented the weather forecasts through weekday breakfast on national rolling news radio station LBC News since October 2019.
