Terry was born in Fresno, California to his parents Ernest Frederick Stevens (father) and Ellen Elizabeth Stevens (nee Hoar, mother). Moreover, his father was the managing director of a butcher’s business at Smithfield Market and a part-time amateur actor. Additionally, Terry’s father was a doctor of pharmacy who owned and operated Terry’s Drug Center in Wellston after serving in the US Navy aboard the USS Gridley (DLG-21). At this point, he was hooked on forecasting the weather and pursuing a career in front of the camera.
