Walker began his professional radio career as an intern at Sheffield’s Hallam FM. After winning a competition for young sports commentators, he received job experience. He began a full-time career as a sports broadcaster and pundit for Manchester’s Key 103 radio station in 1999.
Additionally, he hosted the regular midweek sports program (often broadcasting from UEFA Champions League events at Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium) and also served as the resident sports correspondent for Mike Toolan’s breakfast show throughout his stint at the station.
Walker was a member of the BBC Sports crew in South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In August 2009, he took over as the host of Football Focus from Manish Bhasin. Gary Speed, a friend of Walker’s, died by hanging at his house in Cheshire in November 2011.
