Joseph Lowery Biography

Born in Huntsville, Alabama, Joseph Lowery was a civil rights movement leader and an American minister in the United Methodist Church.

He later became the third president of the Southern Christian leadership conference. In the 1960s he participated in most of the civil rights movement major activities. In 2009, president Barrack Obama awarded him with the presidential medal of freedom.

Lowery attended middle school in Chicago, during this period he was staying with relatives. He went back to Huntsville, Alabama, where he completed his high school at William hooper council high school.

After attending Knoxville college and Alabama A&m college, he went to Payne theological seminary.  Later on, he attained a doctorate degree of divinity at Chicago ecumenical institute.

Joseph Lowery career

From 1952 to 1961 Lowery was pastor of the warren street methodist church. He began the movements of his civil rights in the 1950s. After Rosa Parks’ arrest in 1955, he helped lead the Montgomery bus boycott. He was the president of the Southern Christian leadership conference from 1977 to 1997. The organization was co-founded in 1957 by Lowery and Martin Luther King jr.

Lowery was the president and co-founder of the black leadership forum, which protested the existence of apartheid in South Africa. From 1986 to 1992 the civil rights activist served as pastor of cascade united methodist church in Atlanta.

After his retirement from the ministry, he remained active in both Christian and political activities. To honor him, the city government of Atlanta renamed Ashby Street after him.
