Kafanov joined CNN in 2019 after nearly a decade as a foreign journalist in war zones throughout the world. She has reported from Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Myanmar, the Korean Peninsula, Pakistan, Russia, Turkey, Venezuela, and Yemen, among other places.
Kafanov has covered a wide range of stories for CNN, including the coronavirus epidemic, ongoing statewide protests and public upheaval prompted by George Floyd’s death, the terrible impact of climate change, and record-breaking wildfires in the West, and the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election.
Prior to joining CNN, Kafanov worked as a foreign correspondent for NBC News in London, where he covered big international news events such as terrorist attacks across Europe, the fight against ISIS in Iraq and Syria, and the Korean nuclear situation.
She was one of the first reporters on the scene in Amatrice when a terrible earthquake nearly destroyed the Italian town in 2016, and she was the first American journalist to gain access to Russia’s newly formed Arctic Military Brigade in 2017. Her feature story assignments have taken her from the Great Pyramid of Giza to a freezing surfing expedition 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
Previously, Kafanov worked as a freelance journalist in the Middle East, Europe, and Russia, reporting on the impact of violence and conflict on civilian communities.
