Johnston trained at Rafael Grigorian Ballet School in Elmira in her early days. She won Hollywood Vibe National Dance Competition in Anaheim, California at the age of 3 and 8. Moreover, at the Evolve Dance Complex in Pittsburgh, she took dance lessons. Gradually, she took acting classes in Ithaca and New York as she sought interest in acting and even more auditioned for an Off-Broadway Dream Street. Nearly every week, her mother drove her to New York City for auditions.
Before earning her big-screen debut in The Greatest Showman as Caroline Barnum, Johnson; the dancer turned actress performed on Broadway in productions of Matilda the Musical and The Nutcracker. Also, in 2017, in the award-winning film The Post as Marina Bradlee, she appeared.
Furthermore, in Kevin Can Wait (2018) and The Blacklist (2018), Fosse/Verdon (2019) made a one-episode appearance. Additionally, she appeared in 9-1-1 (2020) after her appearance in The Greatest Showman. Moreover, she appeared as Young Shannan in the film Lost Girls in 2020.
