Savannah Clark Guthrie is an American broadcast journalist and attorney. She has held the position of the main co-anchor of the NBC News morning show Today since July 2012. In addition, she joined NBC News as a legal analyst and correspondent, in September 2007.  Regularly, she reported on trials throughout the country.

Early Career

Guthrie attended the University of Arizona after high school. Her mother suggested taking classes in journalism when she was unsure of what to study. She landed a job at a local public television station while in school. She took a job at a local TV station in Columbia, Missouri when she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism in 1993. Additionally, she was offered a position with an NBC affiliate in her hometown of Tucson after two years of working for the local TV station in Colombia.

She headed east to another NBC affiliate, WRC-TV in Washington, D.C. five years later. Here she covered attacks on the Pentagon and anthrax mailings on September 11, 2001. Moreover, she was also earning a law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center while working as a freelance reporter. She received the highest score on the Arizona bar exam and graduated magna cum laude in 2002.

She specialized in white-collar criminal defense and practiced law with Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer, and Feld from 2002 to 2003. As a legal affairs correspondent for Court Tv, she returned to TV journalism in 2004.

NBC’s ‘Today’ Show

Guthrie returned to NBC as a legal correspondent in 2007. From 2008 to 2011, she was the network’s White House correspondent. Most notably, she traveled with the Sarah Palin campaign and covered the 2008 presidential election. Her team won an Emmy for their coverage on election night. She also co-anchored The Daily Rundown on MSNBC in 2010 and 2011.

She joined the Today show as co-host of the third hour as well as the legal correspondent in June 2011. Also, she courted controversy after an interview where she compared breastfeeding to going to the bathroom in addition to interviewing subjects such as Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, and Meryl Streep.

Moreover, she became co-anchor of Today in July 2012 replacing Ann Curry. Her co-anchor, Matt Lauer gave her an enthusiastic welcome on her first day. He told the audience that she had a weird sense of humor and a great attitude.

She broke the news to viewers that Lauer had been fired over allegations of sexual misconduct with fellow Today personality Hoda Kotb by her side on November 29, 2017. This propelled Today’s ratings past those of ABC’s Good Morning America over a two-week period.

Moreover, she made headlines when a microphone caught her swearing before returning from a commercial break the following March. She added that it is a good thing she does not wear a mic all day and seemed to take it in stride, tweeting.
